Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to help students improve their skills in English reading, listening, and grammar, using English Gothic novels as material. In the course, students will read five short stories written between the end of the19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, by five English or American novelists, Hector H. Munro (Saki), Oscar Wilde, Richard Middleton, Arthur Q. Couch, and Henry James. All these short stories are rewritten versions of the original texts, rewritten in simple, plain English without spoiling the atmosphere and style of the originals. Each lesson consists of listening practice, reading practice, comprehension questions, and grammar practice, giving students well-balanced training in English. Moreover, students will consider how the genre of Gothic novels born in 18th century Britain still impact various works of entertainment today. At the end of the course, students are expected to read and enjoy various types of English texts according to each student's interest and ability.
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the Japanese introduction of the author of the story. After each class meeting, students will have to do review assignments. Your study time will be more than one hour for a class.
Grading will be decided based on review assignments (20%), in class contribution (20%), and term-end examination (60%).
