Outline (in English)

Noh drama has its roots in the ancient Chinese performing art of sangaku, which was introduced to Japan from China. In the Heian period (794-1185), sangaku became known as sarugaku, and in the Kamakura (1192-1333) and Nanbokucho (1333-1392) periods, sarugaku evolved into Noh drama. The history of the development from Sangaku to Noh is also the history of the transformation of Chinese performing arts into Japanese style. On the other hand, Noh drama not only dramatized Japanese myths, history, and stories, but also produced many works that covered Chinese history and stories. What changed in the development from "sangaku" to "sarugaku" and how? What kind of knowledge about China was shared among the people of medieval Japan when the Noh drama were created? What were the innovations used to create Chinese imagery on stage? In this class, after understanding the history of the development from sangaku to sarugaku and Noh, we will clarify issues such as how Noh dramatized China and what kind of image of China was depicted in the Noh plays from various perspectives such as literary history, social history, and cultural history, and we will discuss the significance of these works in the history of literature. The significance of these works in the history of literature will be discussed through lectures by the instructor and presentations by the students. In the spring semester, we will focus on "Sarugaku" and "Noh" especially until the first half of the 15th century. It also enhances the developement of student's skill in reading ancient documments.Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant books.Grading will be decided based on lab reports (70%), and the quality of the students’ experimental performance in the lab (30%).
