Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to understand Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987). By reading closely the novel itself as well as various kinds of literary criticism written on it, we will examine the representations of motherhood found in the novel as well as other works by Morrison and how the novel is different from slave narratives. The course requires students’ presentations and class discussions, and so it will enhance their skills in close reading of texts and in effective oral presentations and academic papers. Students’ required study time for each class meeting is at least four hours. Grading will be based on in-class contribution (40 %), presentations (30%), and papers (30%).
