Outline (in English)

[Introduction to Comparative Media Studies: From Adaptation to ‘2.5D’]
Artistic expression that bridges different media has been the subject of theorizing in a variety of fields, including media studies, art studies, and literary studies. In this class, we will read excerpts from introductory research papers on topics such as adaptation, "transmedia," "media mix," and "2.5-dimensional" culture. We hope to discuss with you what is at stake and what approaches are possible in this field. Depending on students' interests, we may also cover a variety of phenomena, from manga to anime, from video games to film, and so on.
