Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
The aim of this course is to help students acquire the ability to think philosophically on their own through the study of the history of Western philosophy from ancient times to the present.

How does the world come into being?
 How can we know anything?
 What is rightness?
 Are mind and body separate?
 What is "I"?
Is it possible to understand others who are different from ourselves?

These are universal questions that have been asked in various times and places, and are fundamental questions for those of us living today.
The aim of this course is not just to cram knowledge, but to help each student acquire the ability to think about philosophical matters on their own through the study of the "history of philosophical thought".
This lecture is given over a short period of time (only half a semester), and naturally, it is not possible to cover the entirety of the vast history of philosophy. Therefore, the aim is to understand the flow and framework of the history of thought by picking up the essence of the discussions. For issues not covered in this lecture, reference materials will be presented accordingly.

【Learning Objectives】
・To acquire the ability to think philosophically with their own minds in order to live in the 21st century.
・To learn the basic history of philosophy and then to learn the ability to apply it in relation to contemporary issues.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
