Outline and objectives

This is a writing and presentation course with a focus on enabling students to produce long-form academic writing in English. The aim of this course is to assist students in becoming effective writers who are able to express their critical thinking and organisational skills and present those ideas to others in English.

Goal

The main goals are as follows:
1. Students will develop the skills to conceive and organise ideas for writing;
2. Students will develop the ability to research information to use in long-form pieces of academic writing:
3. Students will work on writing and editing long-form pieces of academic writing;
4. Students will examine ways to present their writing to an audience.

Students’ work will include the following activities:
1. Writing various kinds of academically-oriented material;
2. Asking and answering questions with a partner or in small groups about the material;
3. Listening to audio or watching video clips of presentations;
4. Reading comprehension and analysis of paragraphs, essays and presentation scripts;
5. Researching and evaluating information to use in written work;
6. Peer editing the written work of students
7. Reading and responding to the written ideas of other students in the class;
8. Doing the online homework activities related to the unit;

Course introduction and explanation. Getting information on students’ backgrounds and needs. Level checking of students’ English, Part 1 (Basics of English writing).

Level checking of students’ English, Part 2 (Basics of paragraph and essay writing structure)

第3回 / Week 3[対面/face to face]:Brainstorming, rhetorical modes and organisation

Methods of brainstorming. Topic and focus selection. Understanding and choosing rhetorical modes and organisational patterns. Creating an outline for your writing.

第4回 / Week 4[対面/face to face]:Research principles

Understanding different kinds of support. Checking if supporting information is reliable or not. Deciding how much and what kind of support you need.

第5回 / Week 5[対面/face to face]:Doing research

Finding material to use in your thesis or presentation script. Arranging the information you find to fit your outline.

Principles of creating an effective questionnaire. Creating your own questionnaire. Conducting your survey. Evaluating survey results.

Understanding basic report structures. Explaining data and analysing results. Maintaining a consistent style. Writing a report of the survey you conducted previously.

Understanding essays and long form pieces of academic writing. Understanding what to include in the different parts of an essay. Planning an essay. Writing a first draft. Editing, peer editing and rewriting.

Understanding the purpose of reviews. Selecting criteria for use in a review. Selecting language for criteria. Choosing what to review. Writing a review.

第10回 / Week 10[対面/face to face]:Biographies, histories and narratives

Using the past tenses when writing. Using time-sequence words. Describing personal experiences and historic events. Planning and organizing fictional narratives. Using adjectives and adverbs effectively.

Using the future tenses when writing. Writing about future plans. Making predictions and expressing probability.

第12回 / Week 12[対面/face to face]:Demonstrations and instructions

Understanding what demonstrations/instructions are used for and why. Understanding the components of a demonstrative or instructional piece of writing. Creating your own demonstrative piece of writing.

Understanding persuasive writing. Understanding the components of a persuasive piece of writing. Understanding the relationship between opinions and supporting reasons. Fact checking persuasive writing.

Writing your own piece of persuasive writing.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students will required to do homework, mainly in the form of completion of follow-up exercises in the ‘Study Centre’ website, research of the topics covered in the class and preparation for the next class. On average, the amount of work outside of class will be approximately 60 minutes per week.

Textbooks

This course will use extracts from two books co-authored by the teacher: (1) The English Course - Writing Book 1 (Second Edition) by Gary Ireland and Max Woollerton. Published by The English Company (2022) ISBN 978-4-9902962-9-2; (2) The English Course - Presentation Book 1 by Gary Ireland and Max Woollerton. Published by The English Company (2021) ISBN 978-4-9902962-8-5. In addition, students will receive handouts from the teacher. [IMPORTANT NOTE: It will not be a requirement to purchase the books, but it is recommended.]

Grading criteria

In-Class Performance 100% The evaluation criteria are as follows: The total percentage will be accumulated from student classwork participation scores (35%), homework scores (35%), finished written submissions (30%). There is an absence limit of 3 classes and a lateness limit of 20 minutes. Lateness in excess of 20 minutes is counted as absence. Three times late is counted as one absence. Students who exceed the limit will not pass the course. Absences and lateness will result in a reduction in points from the classwork score.

Students need to bring a digital device with the ability to connect to the Internet. A laptop computer or a tablet would be the best kind of device to use.
