Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
In early modern Japan, people sought to transform nature and obtain various services through the development of natural resources. However, excessive modification of nature created "distortions" that led to frequent disasters, and people began to curb development and aim for coexistence between people and nature through sustainable use of natural resources. In this course, the flow of time is placed on the vertical axis, and "the relationship between people and nature," "the relationship between people and people," and "the relationship between nature and nature through people's livelihood" are placed on the horizontal axis, and how these relationships have changed is lectured. The purpose of this class is to acquire a basic knowledge of "the history of the relationship between people and nature in early modern Japan" and to acquire the ability to historically examine the changes in this relationship.

【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
In this course, taking up "the history of the relationship between people and nature in early modern Japan," the objectives are 1) to be able to explain the meaning and usage of historical terms and how to read and understand historical materials based on specific examples, and 2) to be able to construct a rich historical picture by focusing on changes over time and regional as well as national trends while being aware of time and space as "early modern Japan.

【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
Students are expected to prepare and review using handouts, reference books related to the theme, etc. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Grading will be based on the final exam (60%) and reports, etc. (40%). The final exam will be evaluated based on the level of understanding of the course content, and the reports, etc. will be evaluated based on the richness of the responses to the assignments.
