Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
As the world becomes more globalized, more firms are crossing national borders to expand their business activities overseas. Not only large firms but also small- and medium-sized firms and startups are getting more engaged in international business. Global business strategy has become an essential part of strategic management. However, because of differences between the foreign markets and the home market, firms often fail to gain competitive advantages overseas. How to gain a competitive advantage in an unfamiliar business environment is an important issue for firms.
This course introduces students to key concepts and frameworks of international business studies, focusing on the following issues:
Cultural and linguistic barriers
Theory of internationalization.
Students will understand how firms gain competitive advantages in foreign markets, and acquire a skill to analyze firms’ success and failure in foreign markets.
(Learning objectives)
The goal of this course is to understand the basics of international business, which includes foreign direct investment, cultural differences, language barriers, and internationalization theory. At the end of this course, students are expected to develop an ability to analyze firms’ success and failure in foreign countries.
