Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In this course, we will closely read poetry contained in the anthology Wen Xuan, which was compiled by Xiao Tong, a Crown Prince of the Chinese Liang Dynasty. Wen Xuan was one of the most familiar Chinese classics for aristocrats in the Heian period and has been influential in subsequent Japanese literature. In this course, we will critically examine existing translations in reference to commentaries written in Literary Chinese (Li Shan and Commentaries by Five Officials). In so doing, we seek to deepen our understanding on ancient Chinese society and culture and while developing basic skills for reading Chinese classical writings through close reading of poetry contained in Wen Xuan.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
-A. Acquire basic knowledge of Wen Xuan.
-B. Acquire the basic skills necessary to read and comprehend Chinese materials.
