Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to acquire an understanding of a part of Japanese Buddhism through reading thoroughly "Kyougyoushinshou" by Shinran. In particular, since Shinran's thought is one of the foundations of modern Japanese thought, we will seek to understand what modernity in Japan was all about. By the end of this course, students should be able to fully grasp the background of Japanese thought in modern times.
Student will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class. Your study time will be more than six hours for a class.
Grading will be decided based on the quality of the students' experimental performance in the lab 70%, in-class contribution 30%.
