Outline (in English)
（Course outline）This course helps students acquire the professional skills and knowledge to write their master's thesis on pre-modern western history.
（Learning Objectives）The followings are the goals of this course.
- Students are able to read accurately and critically academic texts written in foreign languages.
- Students are able to read accurately and critically historical sources written in Latin.
- Students are able to progress their research and to make a logical and convincing presentation on it.
（Learning activities outside of classroom）Students’ study time will be at least four hours for a class. They are expected to make a translation of the assigned Latin text before each class meeting, and after the class to review their own translation. They are also required to progress their own research and prepare to make a presentation on it.
（Grading Criteria /Policy）Grading will be decided based on the preparation for each class meeting (40%), the reading comprehension of Latin texts (40%), and in-class contribution (20%).

西洋前近代史の修士論文執筆に必要な専門的技術・知識を習得する。
到達目標Goal
この授業の到達目標は以下のとおり。
・外国語で書かれた学術文献を正確かつ批判的に読解できること。
・西洋前近代史の研究に必須となるラテン語史料を正確かつ批判的に読解できること。
・自身の研究を進展させるとともに、研究について論理的かつ説得的な報告ができること。

この授業は、ローマ共和政が帝政へと転換する契機となったカエサルとポンペイウスのあいだに生じた内乱について、当事者であるカエサル自身がその経緯を綴った『内乱記』を精読する。ラテン語の史料を日本語に訳出するかたちで講読を進め、辞書や文法書の使い方を身につけることはもとより、訳書（日本語訳・英語訳・仏語訳）や注釈書（英語）を適宜参照することで史料に関する理解を深める。あらかじめ訳読の担当者を決めることはせず、受講生全員が十分な予習を毎回してくることが必要となる。なお、第12回・第13回については、受講生による修士論文中間報告の機会を設ける。

本授業の授業外学習時間は４時間以上となる。授業に臨むにあたってはラテン語史料の所定箇所について訳文を準備し、授業後には自身の訳文を再検討することが必要となる。また、自身の研究を進めるとともに、自らの研究についての報告準備を行うことも求められる。
