Outline (in English)
This course introduces developments and challenges of public history to students taking the course. Students are expected to learn about such topics as the past and future of public history, doing public history, and public history and museums.
Before and/or after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on term-end report (60%) and in-class contribution (40%).

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
パブリック・ヒストリーについて検討する。
「歴史の実践」は専門的な歴史家のみが独占的に行うものなのか、それとも歴史に関心を持つあらゆる人々に開かれるべきものなのか。後者の立場を取り、歴史学の場の開放を唱えるパブリック・ヒストリーへの関心が近年高まっている。パブリック・ヒストリーとは何か――その領分がいかに広がり、いかなる可能性を秘め、いかなる課題を抱えているのか。菅豊・北條勝貴編『パブリック・ヒストリー入門――開かれた歴史学への挑戦』（勉誠出版、2021年）および James B. Gardner and Paula Hamilton, eds., Oxford Handbook of Public History (Oxford University Press, 2017) を講読しながら考えていきたい。後期は後者の文献を中心に検討する。

パブリック・ヒストリーの来歴を踏まえ、パブリック・ヒストリーの可能性と課題を理解する。
