Outline (in English)

This course explores Western and Japanese modern sociological and political theories. We will learn the differences between theories that emerged from the Western realities and theories that were generated in Japan or from Japanese scholars. The course also intends to learn the (in)applicability of Western theories to Japanese or other non-western societies. The fall semester focuses on the topics of the public sphere or publics by reading mainly the work of Jurgen Habermas. Based on the theoretical understanding of “multiple publics,” we will also learn about Japanese publics in the proto-modern era (Eiko Ikegami) and new forms of publics emerging in contemporary Japanese society.
