Outline (in English)

This course explores Western and Japanese modern sociological and political theories. We will learn the differences between theories that emerged from the Western realities and theories that were generated in Japan or from Japanese scholars. The course also intends to learn the (in)applicability of Western theories to Japanese or other non-western societies. Spring semester focuses on the issue of totalitarianism by reading Hanna Arendt and Masao Maruyama and explores the dark times in the past and critically examines the rising nationalism in our contemporary society.
