Outline (in English)

The decade-long Ōnin no ran (Ōnin Disturbances) erupted in the fifth month of 1467, four months after the death of Saburō Motoshige. The ensuing war over shogunal succession saw the collapse of the political, economic, social, and cultural order in Kyoto and by extension all of Japan. The conflict led to the eventual downfall of the Ashikaga shogunate and marked the beginning of an era generally referred to as the Sengoku (Warring Provinces) period. This course deals with the situation of No in this Sengoku period, especially in the second half of the fifteenth century. It also enhances the developement of student's skill in reading ancient documments.Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant books.Grading will be decided based on lab reports (70%), and the quality of the students’ experimental performance in the lab (30%).
