Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of linguistics, the scientific study of language.
[Learning objectives]
Students should develop an understanding of the basic principles and terminology in subareas of linguistics such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and be able to solve various problems in these areas. By the end of the course, students should be able to identify and attempt to solve practical problems related to language.
[Learning activities outside of classroom]
(1) For each class period, students should do the assigned reading, work on homework assignments, and prepare for presentation and discussion for the next class. (2) Toward the end of the course, students should select and read an academic paper pertaining to language, and present its contents to the class. The standard study time required before and after each class is 4 hours total.
[Grading criteria/policy]
Grades will be determined based on attendance and participation (25%), homework (50%), and final presentation (25%).
