Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to explore the representations of mothers and motherhood in the works of American women writers. We will read their short stories from the late nineteenth century through the twenty-first century. While paying special attention to women's changing roles in society, we will also consider specific themes and strategies unique to American women writers. The course requires students' presentations and class discussions, and so it will enhance their skills in close reading of texts and in effective oral presentations and academic papers. Students' required study time for each class meeting is at least four hours. Grading will be based on in-class contribution (40%), presentations (30 %), and papers (30 %).
