Outline (in English)
[Lecture Title:] Reading Jewett’s The Country of the Pointed Firs
Students learn to carry to a higher level the skillful analysis of language and text, by close reading of Sarah Orne Jewett's "Dunnet Landing Stories" including the "novel." Students also obtain knowledge about literary regionalism or "local color" and about its developments in the nineteenth to twentieth centuries.
[Learning activities outside of classroom:] Before/after each class meeting, students are expected to spend 2 hours
respectively to understand the course content.
[Grading Criteria/Policies:] Overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: in-class contribution [positive participation] (70%),final report [paper] (30%).

レポーター制によるアメリカ文学テクストの精読。あらかじめ担当を決めて、レポーターは［あらすじ］［語句］［コメント］からなるハンドアウトを準備して報告する。その後質疑応答・議論をおこなう。
授業で提出されたリアクションペーパーなどにおけるコメント・質問へは、そのうちのいくつかを取り上げ、全体に対してフィードバックをおこない、議論に活かします。

研究書を読むことと辞書を引いて予習すること。予習・復習時間は各２時間を標準とする。
テキスト（教科書）Textbooks
安価なペーパーバック（Signet Classics など）が入手困難なので、Library of America 版を利用する予定。――Michael Davitt Bell 編の Sarah Orne Jewett: Novels and Stories: Deephaven; A Country Doctor; The Country of the Pointed Firs; Dunnet Landing Stories; Selected Stories and Sketches をプリント等で配布する。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
「配分（%）」：出席を前提とした上での授業への積極的な参加度70パーセント、期末レポート30パーセント
「評価基準」： レポーター時の発表の内容とまとまり度と努力、非レポーター時の発言による参加の積極性、期末レポートの内容、以上を数値化して合計したうえで総合的に評価する。
