Outline (in English)
This class is a seminar on American fiction. The course begins with a reading of Leslie Fiedler's Love and Death in the American Novel, framing the questions of what the novel is and what the novel does, as well as what is “American” in the American novel. Through the close reading of some of major works of American literary naturalism, students develop their skills to analyze literary texts in a critical way with focus both on their individuality and historicity. Most classes consist of presentations by students, class discussions, and lectures.
Grades will be determined based on the following:
1) Participation and discussion (30%)
2) Presentations (30%)
2) Final paper (40%)

テーマ：
アメリカ小説における愛と死と自然主義
概要：
本授業は、小説（novel）の歴史を背景として、アメリカ小説の展開に大きく関わる作家の作品を読んでいくものである。今年度は、今なお刺激的なLeslie Fiedlerの古典的アメリカ小説論Love and Death in the American Novelを下敷きにして、世紀転換期の自然主義文学を取り上げ、代表的諸作品を検討する。

・自分の考えを分かりやすく効果的に伝えることができる。

・小説の歴史と諸理論の概要について理解する。
・修士課程の学生に対して指導的な役割を演じられる。

受講者は毎週予習として作品または批評を読み、発言できるよう準備をした上で授業に臨む。授業は演習形式で進め、毎回発表担当者がハンドアウトを作成してプレゼンテーションをおこない、担当コメンテーターによるコメント・質問、そして全体でのディスカッションをする。適宜教員による補足説明がなされる。発表担当者は、担当範囲の内容を要約したうえで、重要と思われる箇所をいくつか引用して分析し、ディスカッションのためのトピックを提示する。
発表に対しては授業内で口頭によるレスポンスがなされ、レポートに対してはフィードバックのコメントをつけたファイルが返却される。
