Outline (in English)
This course examines the role of research methods and statistics in the linguistic sciences.
Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following: (a) define and describe quantitative research methods commonly used in the linguistic sciences; (b) perform statistical analyses using Excel, JASP, and R; (c) input data and apply an appropriate method of analysis; and (d) report the results of statistical analyses in APA format.
Students should complete the reading assignments before each class and be prepared to discuss the content of the readings.
Final grades will be calculated based on the following:
Presentations: 50%; Final Data Analysis Assignment: 50%

Most classes will consist of group discussions and lectures on research methods and statistical analyses. Time will be allotted for students to perform statistical analyses. The course content and examples presented in class will focus on general topics and second language research. This course is conducted in English. Feedback will be given after each presentation.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Presentations: 50%; Final Data Analysis Assignment: 50%
Students will be evaluated based on in-class presentations related to the content covered in class and their performance on a data analysis assignment. A highly evaluated presentation shows synthesis and clear explanation of the relevant material. The data analysis assignment will be assessed on the accuracy and thoroughness of the statistical results and the format in which they are presented. Details will be given in class.
