Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to understand Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899). By reading closely the novel itself as well as various kinds of literary criticism written on it, we will examine why the novel was neglected when it was first published and why it took more than half a century before it was regarded as one of America's major works. The course requires students' presentations and class discussions, and so it will enhance their skills in close reading of texts and in effective oral presentations and academic papers. Students' required study time for each class meeting is at least four hours. Grading will be based on in-class contribution (40 %), presentations (30%), and papers (30%).
