Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In this course, we will closely read Sima Qian’s Shiji (The Records of the Grand Historian). Shiji is one of the most familiar Chinese classics that not only exerted strong influence on the Tale of Genji but also had enduring effects on the subsequent Japanese literature. In this course, we will critically examine existing translations in reference to commentaries written in literary Chinese (So-called Sanjia Zhu—three standard commentaries—and Shiki kaichu kosho by Sukenobu Takigawa). In so doing, we seek to deepen our understanding on ancient Chinese society and culture and absorb wisdom of people described therein through close reading of Chapter 77, Biography of Wei Wuji, of Shiji, and develop basic skills for close reading of Chinese classic writings.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
-A. Acquire basic knowledge of Shiji.
-B. Acquire the basic skills necessary to read and comprehend Chinese materials.
-C. Critically examine existing translations with reference to notes written in Chinese, and acquire the ability to interpret the text of Shiji in an original way.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapter from the text. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: 70% for preparation of materials used in class: 30% for active participation in class discussion.
