- Freedom and the Foundations of the Categorical Imperative -

Read Section III (Dritter Abschnitt) of Kant's Groundwork of The metaphysics of morals. In Section III, an attempt is made to lay a foundation for the concept of freedom and the categorical imperative. This is an important issue that concerns the foundation of Kant's entire practical philosophy. The text is in the German original, but students may participate using English or Japanese translations.

[Learning Objectives]
The following attitudes, skills, and knowledge of classical texts in philosophy (especially Kantian philosophy) will be further deepened.
(1) To read the original texts carefully and to discover the thinker's thought in depth.
(2) Deepen understanding of the subject matter by discovering, investigating, and considering questions.
(3) Formulate more persuasive opinions by referring to the opinions of others.
(4) Compare and contrast the ideas that have been excavated from the text with those of other thinkers.
(5) Refer to classical and current research literature from Japan, Europe, the U.S., and elsewhere to deepen one's own research.
The goal is that these will be useful in the preparation of the doctoral dissertation.
