Outline (in English)

Read Kant's Groundwork of The metaphysics of morals
- Freedom and the Foundations of the Categorical Imperative -

Read Section III (Dritter Abschnitt) of Kant's Groundwork of The metaphysics of morals. In Section III, an attempt is made to lay a foundation for the concept of freedom and the categorical imperative. This is an important issue that concerns the foundation of Kant's entire practical philosophy. The text is in the German original, but students may participate using English or Japanese translations.

[Learning Objectives]
Students will acquire the following attitudes, skills, and knowledges regarding Kant's classical texts.
(1) To go back to the original text and uncover the thinker's thoughts themselves.
(2) To deepen their understanding of the subject by discovering, investigating, and considering questions.
(3) To formulate more persuasive opinions by referring to the opinions of others.
(4) To compare and contrast ideas from the text with other ones.
(5) To communicate the contents of reports in a clear and correct manner.
(6) Participants translating a German text should be able to read and understand the original German text accurately.
(7) Participants who primarily use Japanese, English, or other translated texts can accurately read the meaning of the translated text and technical terms.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
The standard preparation and review time for this class is each 2 hours.
To review and deepen our understanding of the previous lesson. To understand the entire contents of the next text, and to investigate any questions or problems. Those in charge of translating the text should prepare for the reading, and those in charge of protocol should prepare a handout summarizing the previous reading.

[Grading Criteria /Policy]
(1) 70% of the evaluation will be made in terms of the comprehension of source texts, the ability to find, investigate and consider problems, the communication skills for exchanging opinions, the ability to compare ideas, and the completion of the protocol (summary of the previous session).
(2) 30% of the evaluation will be made in terms of achievement level of the final report.
