Outline (in English)

授業概要(Course outline)
From the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, the race to acquire colonies by Western powers intensified, and Western powers and Japan expanded their power in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. As a result, the conflict between the powers eventually led to two world wars, and colonial rule and warfare had a major impact on the Pacific islands. Based on these historical backgrounds, the aim of this course is to help students acquire their own understanding of the regional formation in the Pacific Ocean, especially its relationship with Japan and the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries.

到達目標(Learning Objectives)
The goal of this course is to deepen their own understanding of the formation of the Pacific region in the 19th and 20th centuries, while providing historical background. Currently, several names are used to refer to the Pacific Ocean, including Oceania, Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia. The background to the use of these names is strongly influenced by the colonial rule and wars waged by Western countries and Japan. At the end of the course, students are expected to grasp the flow of the formation of the Pacific region by discussing several examples of conflicts among countries over the Pacific Ocean.

授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend three hours to understand the course content. Students are encouraged to deepen their understanding of the topics to be covered in the class by independently reading the references listed in the reference section and other literature introduced in the class.
