Outline (in English)

(Outline and objectives)
This course examines Japanese diplomacy from 1945 to the early 1970s, focusing on the links between diplomacy and domestic politics. The following topics are to be covered:
1) political and security issues during the occupation era, such as the establishment of the Constitution, rearmament, and negotiations over the Peace Treaty and the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty,
2) establishment of the Japan-U.S. security system, such as amendment of the Security Treaty and negotiation for Okinawa reversion,
3) normalization of diplomatic relations and remaining problems with Russia, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and Chine
4)Economic Diplomacy in the high economic growth period, such as access to free trade regime, economic relations with Asian countries, and trade friction with the U.S.

(Learning activities outside of the classroom)
Students should expect to spend an additional four hours before/after the lecture class engaged in reading, review, and writing activities.

(Grading Criteria/Policy)
Grading will be decided based on the small tests(50%) and term-end examination(50%).
