Outline (in English)

Building on the contents of“The Japan-U.S. relationship Part I” provided in the previous semester, this course takes a thematic approach to the history and the present of the Japan-U.S. relationship. The selected themes are 1) nuclear weapons and power, 2) Okinawa, 3) Anpo, 4) Japanese-Americans, 5) the place of wars in U.S. society, and 6) the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement and the American military presence. We will watch six films that address the above themes and analyze representations of the Japan-U.S. relationship in each work. Further, we will consider the producers’ intentions, messages, and additional information necessary for us to better understand each theme and the Japan-U.S. relationship. By evaluating each film based on lectures, assignments, and discussions, the students will learn how to develop a multi-dimensional understanding of the Japan-U.S. relationship and cultivate analytical skills that can be applied in other disciplines and activities.
