Outline (in English)

This course offers an overview of the history of the Japan-U.S. relationship with a focus on its post-1945 trajectory. Covering the period from the nineteenth century to the present, the course locates the present-day Japan-U.S. relationship in global history. The students will acquire a chronological understanding of the Japan-U.S. diplomatic relationship and cultivate skills to analyze the bilateral relationship’s interactions with the multi-layered politics arising from global capitalism, inter-state conflicts, class, race, and gender. Further, this course aims to develop a structural and multi-dimensional understanding of the Japan -U.S. relationship with particular attention to the U.S.-occupation of Okinawa (1945-1972) and its aftermaths in order for us to better understand the two countries' contemporary problems.
