Outline (in English)

[Course outline}
This course introduces students to the organizing principles of tort law, such as civil liability, negligence, duty of care, causation, damages and vicarious liability. The general principles of tort law is provided in Chapter 5, Part.3 of the Japanese Civil Code, and tort law is a branch of law whose rules and methods are mainly developed through court decisions, thereby we will concentrate on case law analysis as well as legislative provisions. The course will also address the basic principles of unjust enrichment and negotiorum gestio under Chapter 3 and 4 of the Civil Code.
This course falls under all Course Models.
[Learning Objectives]
Upon completion of this course, students should have a clearer sense of how the law operates and how lawyers (courts) help to shape it in civil law practice, enhance reasoning skills in relation to complex legal problems and develop the ability to identify major tort issues which may arise in a particular factual situation.

Students are expected to read course materials that will be posted on the course website. Your required study time is at least 4 hours for each class.
