Outline (in English)

【Outline and objectives】 While comparing various arts such as painting, opera, literature, Noh, Kabuki, and architecture, how the same material (theme) has been expressed in Italy, France, Germany, England, America, etc., and how it is interpreted. The main aims of this course are to deepen knowledge and understanding of the concept of arts and works related to this theme.
We will focus on the theoretical foundations and the conceptual framework of comparative literature through the different types of works to provide students with opportunities to treat various types of literature/artworks from the perspective of comparative literature and culture.
Students are required to be interested in close surveillance of the related works.

【Goal】
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
-understand the concept and the method of world-literature studies.
-conduct a critical analysis of the works mentioned in the class.
-express your own point of view clearly in discussion.

【Work to be done outside of class】: Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapter(s) from the text. Students are required to study at least 4 hours outside of classroom.

【Grading criteria】:Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following.
Term-end test: 50%、 an assignment and in-class contribution: 50%
