Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Although the wind is an atmospheric phenomenon, it also means disease in the historical tale Eiga monogatari (A Tale of Flowering Fortunes), which was compiled in the Heian period. The demoniac wind that causes diseases is known in old folktales in every region of Ryukyu and Japan. In this course, students will study to deepen their understanding of the demoniac wind, spiritual power, and Shamanic cultures.
Learning Objectives: The aim of this course is to understand the consistency of folklore and its stories, and to learn about the power of folklore in preserving traditions.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Intensive reading of textbooks and references is necessary before and after each class. Required study time is one hour for a class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: The final grade will be evaluated by in-class performance (40%) and the result of the term-end examination (60%).
