Outline (in English)

Students are exposed to poetic expressions and sensitivities by writing, reading, translating, and discussing varieties of poetry. They gain insight into the function and nature of poetic language, and the role of the poetic imagination in human intelligence.


Course Outline: In this class we will write, read, and think about poetry: poetry as the magic of words, poetry as an outpouring of the heart; poetry that tells stories, poetry that sings, poetry that prays; poetry for the eyes, poetry for the ears. By becoming familiar with the various forms of poetry, we will gain insight into what poetry is and what it means to be a human being, the only animal that writes poetry, using all of our senses, not just our minds. The spring term will focus on the principles and structure of poetry, while the fall term will consist of lectures and exercises concerning the archetypal image of the poet.

Learning Objectives: Students are exposed to poetic expressions and sensitivities by writing, reading, translating, and discussing varieties of poetry. They gain insight into the function and nature of poetic language, and the role of the poetic imagination in human intelligence.

Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: For the 6 poetry workshops, students are required to write a poem or poetic text either during the class or beforehand. For the 6 lecture classes, they are required to submit their reactions and/or questions after each lecture. Two hours each should be adequate for the preparation and review of each class in this course.

Grading Criteria/Policy: Report (70%), class participation (30%).
