Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This lecture surveys transitions in the forms that written Japanese texts have taken in the modern and contemporary periods.
Learning Objectives: The goal of this lecture is to understand the boom in print culture brought about by type printing, and the changes and challenges presented by the introduction of digital technology.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students should make efforts to keep up with news of new developments in digital techniques, and take care to understand the historical background of literary works that they read.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on: active participation in the class (40%); contents of reaction papers written after each lecture (40%); and an end-of-semester report (20%).
