Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In order to design functional and safe buildings, it is important to understand the forces that occur in the framework in response to external forces such as earthquakes. In this course, students learn about static determinacy mechanics, the foundation of structural mechanics. The course explains the concept of force, the balance of forces, and how to create stress diagrams to help visualize the flow of forces in a framework. Studying mechanics is the equivalent of drawing in painting, and it is important to understand the principles as well as to do numerous exercises on your own with your hands.

【Learning Objectives】
Static determinacy mechanics solves the force balancing equation to obtain the forces in a framework, such as a truss or ramen. It is an important foundation for learning structural mechanics. By working on exercises, students will learn specific calculation methods and force drawing methods.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students are required to work on the exercises before the beginning of each class, and to prepare and submit their answers before the next class.
The standard class time is 100 minutes for self-study of how to solve the exercises, and 2 hours each for answering the exercises and reviewing.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Mid-term exam (20%), final exam (50%), and exercise submissions (30%)
