Outline (in English)

This course looks into linguistic politeness especially of English (or Lingua Franca Englishes) to explore how language use is related to its deep culture. By focusing on both language and context, students will develop an awareness of how context influences language choice and how language in turn helps shape the context. Students will thus be able to understand the social meaning of linguistic politeness in context and explain why certain expressions are often socially preferred in the given culture. Students will also observe and analyze potential causes of intercultural misunderstandings and possible ways to resolve language-related conflicts.
During the course, students are asked to participate in activities by listening to audios or videos multiple times and answering discussion questions on their own. Doing so will prepare them for the mid-term exam conducted online. The outcome of the mid-term exam counts toward 40% of the final grade.
In the latter half of the course, students are invited to communicate with their peers through a discussion function to exchange their observations of linguistic politeness and relevant cultural practice. Such observations should be incorporated into the final paper, in which students are to reflect on the peer discussions and analyses. The final paper will comprise 60% of the course grade.
