Outline (in English)

Outline: In this class, we will study the music as it appears in classical literary works, while overviewing the ancient and medieval history of Japanese music, mainly gagaku (court music). We will objectively watch "Japanese music" in relation to foreign cultures and consider its universality and uniqueness.
 
Goal: Students should deepen understanding of the followings by the end of the course.
- Basic of Japanese ancient and medieval music history.
- The accurate depiction of music in classical literary works.
- The relationship between Japanese and foreign music.
- The universality and uniqueness of Japanese music.
 
Learning activities outside of classroom: Since this is a short-term intensive course, no study time is assumed between each class.In accordance with the standard out-of-class time of 4 hours each.
Preparation for the musical studies is not required, but it is also effective to use the reference books introduced in Japanese. And, please use the library or other sources to research any questions or points of interest.
 
Grading Criteria / Policies: In accordance with the above Goals, the following two will be scored.
- Reaction Papers 50.
- In-class final exam 50.
