Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
Modern pop culture spreads through multiple media such as the
Internet, social media, television, magazines and games, and has
various influences on social norms and our self-formation. In this class,
you will critically appreciate and discuss pop culture content such as
manga, animation, light novels, movies, TV dramas, 2.5dimentional
musicals, and idols. By identifying and analyzing problems from various
angles, you will learn perspectives and methods for actively grasping
dynamic reality and social situations without stopping thinking.
(Learning Objectives)
At the end of the course, students are expected to apply the perspectives
learned in class to discover problems on their own, and to think
about pop culture from multiple perspectives using information formed
by a variety of media, and identify research problems based on the
differences and commonalities among different cultures.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
In addition to researching literature and viewing art related to each
theme, students will be expected to take notes on pop culture-related
news and other topics of interest and use them in class discussions.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)
The overall grade for the class will be determined based on the following
Attitude toward class participation: 20%, assignments to be written and
submitted in class: 30%, final report: 50%.
