Outline (in English)

In this course, we will examine Japan through a comparative theoretical lens. There has long been a complex and challenging issue while employing western-based theory to capture Japan - whether or not the Western theory can apply to non-western Japan. To understand the intricate relationship between Japanese studies and usage of theory, we will start with debates over universalism and particularism as well as the west and the rest dichotomy. Then we devote sessions to examine works by Japanese and western thinkers who examined similar theoretical problems and compare their differences and similarities.
