Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This class in academic writing in English takes two approaches. The first half of each class comprises remedial treatment of English grammar and sentence structure, focussing on a different aspect of English grammar each week. There is a textbook edited by the instructor, distributed in class free of charge. In the second half of each class, students are divided into groups and asked to examine texts of between one and three paragraphs in length that they have drafted and submitted in advance. The instructor distributes versions of these texts with indications of parts that need to be corrected. He then lets the students discuss the problems and possible solutions, before assisting the students in getting the texts into their final form. Each student then submits a final, revised version of their own text.
Learning Objectives: Very simply, to increase the students' writing skill by means of these two approaches.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Preparing answers for the first and second half of each class; submitting those for the second half in advance; and submitting the final, revised version of this after the class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading is based on each student's portfolio of revised versions.
