Outline (in English)

The life of modern people is often described as "urban". Through the urbanization of life, we enjoy the various conveniences and comforts of everyday , and also face the problems unique to the city. It can be said that it was the medieval people who first experienced them in the Japanese archipelago, including at the people's level. In this class, using "Rakuchu Rakugai Zu Byobu", which depicts Kyoto from the first half of the 16th century to the first half of the 17th century, as a material, while reading each one drawn there, changes in the cityscape from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, Think about the way people live in the city.


【Goal】
Through reading comprehension of "Rakuchu Rakugai Zu Byobu", you will learn the basics of reading comprehension of image historical materials, and also learn the basic concepts and ideas of Japanese medieval and modern history, focusing on topics related to cities.

【Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.) 】
The standard preparatory study / review time for this class is 2 hours each.
The reporter is required to thoroughly research and examine what is drawn about the part in charge, and the vocabulary and background knowledge about what is drawn, and read the historical materials. Of course, it is required to prepare for other than the person in charge.

【Grading criteria】
Evaluate with a normal score of 60% and a final exam (or report) of 40%.
We expect active participation in the class.
