Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to understand Willa Cather's My Ántonia (1918) with special attention to its place in the literary history of American women writers. By reading closely the novel itself as well as various kinds of literary criticism written on it, we will examine how her childhood experiences in the South influenced her description of immigrant pioneers in the Middle West, and how her gender consciousness and sexuality are reflected on her use of a male point of view character. The course also enhances students' skills in close reading of texts and in effective oral presentations and academic papers. Students' required study time for each class meeting is at least four hours. Grading will be based on in-class contribution (40 %), presentations (30 %), and papers (30 %).
