Outline (in English)
This class is a seminar on American fiction. The course begins with a historical and theoretical survey of the novel genre, framing the questions of what the novel is and what the novel does, as well as what is “American” in the American novel. Through the close reading of some of major works of what is called "local color" fiction, students develop their skills to analyze literary texts in a critical way with focus both on their individuality and historicity. Most classes consist of presentations by students, class discussions, and lectures.
Grades will be determined based on the following:
1) Participation and discussion (30%)
2) Presentations (30%)
2) Final paper (40%)

アメリカ小説と個人・地域・国家
概要と目的：
本授業は、小説（novel）の歴史を背景として、アメリカ小説の展開に大きく関わる作家の作品を読んでいくものである。春学期は、南北戦争後のリアリズム小説の一大潮流をなした「ローカル・カラー文学」を取り上げ、その歴史的・文学史的位置づけを検討するとともに、代表的諸作品を読み解く。作家や作品の個別性とアメリカ小説の歴史的展開との双方を視野に入れながら作品を検討することを通じて、地域、国家、ジェンダー、人種など多様な観点からのローカル・カラー文学研究の可能性をさぐる。

受講者は毎週予習として作品または批評を読み、発言できるよう準備をした上で授業に臨む。授業は演習形式で進め、毎回発表担当者がハンドアウトを作成してプレゼンテーションをおこない、担当コメンテーターによるコメント・質問、そして全体でのディスカッションをする。適宜教員による補足説明がなされる。発表担当者は、担当範囲の内容を要約したうえで、重要と思われる箇所をいくつか引用して分析し、ディスカッションのためのトピックを提示する。
発表に対しては授業内で口頭によるレスポンスがなされ、レポートに対してはフィードバックのコメントをつけたファイルが返却される。

毎回事前に課題（作品または批評）を読んで、ディスカッションに積極的に参加できるように準備する。面白かった点、考察したい点、質問したい点、気になった表現などについてメモをとっておく。分からない用語や固有名詞はできるだけ自分で調べる。（8～10時間）
