Outline (in English)

This course offers a careful reading of Descartes’ Discours de la méthode in French.
This book is probably one of the most widely read (and the most widely misunderstood) as philosophical work in the world, showing not only the philosopher’s spiritual history, but also a wide range of topics from metaphysics as principle of Cartesian philosophy to nature or medicine as its one of the main fruits. A close reading of this book will help us to understand in what sense this work was revolutionary in the history of Western philosophy, how Descartes established his own system of philosophy in its broadest perspective, and what significance it had for the philosopher himself in the development of his own system.
Students are expected by the end of the course to understand, translate and explain by themselves Descartes’ text in French and its background thoughts, to construct their arguments logically through readings and discussions, and to search by themselves for issues and themes they will address in their own arguments and thesis.
Before each class meeting, students are to read, translate and interpret carefully the relevant text of the next class and to consider the arguments of the text and its possible background sources and thoughts. Students in charge of presentation of the day are to prepare a resume of translation and arguments to be distributed. Required study time is two hours each before and after the class.
Grade will be decided on the following proportion. Presentation: 40%, In-class contribution: 25%, Report: 35% (if no report is assigned, Presentation: 65% & In-class contribution: 35%).
