Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
Religious and ethnic conflicts still continue in the world even though the Islamic State(IS) was destroyed. In Europe there still exist anti-immigration movements against refugees from Syrian civil war. It is not clear where the world is going after Trump administration declared “America First” policy and also the change of the US administration? In the class, current religious conflicts in the world are analyzed by picking up some cases after discussing what religion is meant in Japanese society.
(Learning Objectives)
The important point to think about current religious conflicts in the world including Muslim world is to focusing upon the functions of religions in communities or societies, not the personal beliefs of religions in the Western societies. To grasp religions as civilizations is also important to understand religious phenomena in contemporary society. The clashes of religious civilizations happen not due to the differences of doctrines but because of the historical formation process of religious civilizations. To understand religious civilizations from comparative perspectives is, therefore, to reinterpret the current situation from historical process. Terrorism in the name of religion should be understood not as barbaric anachronism, but as the consequence of the historical process.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
In the Muslim societies or Middle Eastern world, nobody can anticipate what would happen such as terror attacks. Therefore, students attending this class are asked to follow news in newspapers, television or internet so on. Students are also asked to improve their abilities to grab the underlying cause of what are happening every day. Preparation and review are needed for two hours as a standard.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)
