Outline (in English)

Why do some authoritarian countries endure, but others collapse? What will happen once an autocratic leader is ousted by a coup or a popular protest movement? These are the questions explored in this course. The course offers a comparative outlook to the study of authoritarianism, focusing on political institutions such as election, the factors sustaining or breaking it down, as well as global resilience of authoritarianism. The course will then analyze the political dynamics of authoritarian regimes in the former Soviet countries.

All students in the course are expected to come to each seminar having read and prepared to discuss a considerable portion of the reading for each week. In addition, each student will be asked at least once to present and/or comment upon some of reading.
