Outline and objectives

英文法の必須項目をおさえながら正確な英文(センテンス)の書き方、表現法を学ぶ。またパラグラフ・ライティングのための記述の論理を学ぶ。

This course is designed to reinforce essay composition skills and introduce students to practice writing for academic purposes.The primary aim of this course is to give equal or greater emphasis on macro-level composition skills such as essay structure, paragraph structure, coherence, unity; and micro-level skills such as sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and mechanics.

Goal

それぞれの知識を復習し、理解を深化させながら、着実な英作文(センテンス・ライティング)の実践へとつなげる。またパラグラフ・ライティングにおいて「主題文(トピック・センテンス)」をいかに展開するか、勘所を学ぶ。

Students will learn grammar and structure for developing paragraphs and short essays. This class will encourage critical thinking skills enabling students to write down their opinions supported by reasons and examples on important topics.

The class sessions will include a variety of tasks and activity types designed to develop academic writing skills. Class activities will include lecture, a combination of instructor- and student-led discussions, reading strategy practice, writing strategy practice, peer response sessions and revision, instructor presentations, grammar and vocabulary check-ins, assigned readings and in-class composition. Feedback will be oral and written according to the activity. Students will receive feedback in a variety of ways during typical face-to-face classes:
• Announcements at the beginning of class
• Written feedback on assignments
• In-class / One-on-One (Question and Answer )
• Staying after class to ask a question
• Use the rubric to help make your comments actionable for the student

期間中、使用テキストから2章につき1回(都合3回ほど)の課題が出される。この課題提出状況は平常点として算定される。課題はテキストの練習問題から出される。その時点までの復習となるものであるから、必ず自分で行い、提出すること。なお授業中、不明な個所はなるべく放置せず、質問に来て解決すること。

Students are expected to complete weekly reading and writing assignments.本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

Grading criteria

学期末に試験を行なう。成績評価は、・小テスト20 %・
課題の提出 30 %・ライティングクラス活動(4つの主要なライティングエッセイ))40 %・学期末の試験 10 % を総合的に判断して行なう。
