Outline and objectives

The main aim of this course is to explore some communication
strategies for sharing and discussing information and exchanging opinions on contemporary and thought-provoking topics. Students will learn some important communication skills, build their vocabulary, and practice writing and presenting opinions, short reports, and researched information.

Goal

(1) To improve listening comprehension
(2) To gain proficiency in public speaking
(3) To learn to design and use visual media effectively
(4) To improve the structure and organization of presentations

Students will focus on the elements of making effective presentations, including visual media and the structure and organization of their speeches. Learners will practice techniques and improve their communication skills through small group activities and paired practice in preparation for making presentations. In addition, students will watch speeches to analyze presentation techniques and discuss content. Each student will make two major presentations during the semester.

Submission of assignments and feedback will be on Google Classroom and/or At the beginning of class, feedback for the previous class is given using some comments from submitted reaction papers.

Students go over the basics of presenting, i.e. eye contact, voice projection. Put together a full presentation.

Reading & discussing controversial issues: pair work and group work.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students work on projects, make PowerPoint slides, write and memorize speeches, practice presentations, and complete any assigned homework。
Students should be prepared to study up to 3-4 hours outside of class per week depending on the project.

Textbooks

No required texts.
Supplementary materials will be provided by the instructor and students.

Students will need to prepare a notebook,and bring a laptop computer to class.

Grading criteria

To pass this course and receive credit,students must:
1) complete all assignments when they are due
2) participate actively in class and work cooperatively with other students
3) use English during speaking activities in class.
4) demonstrate original writing and thinking- copying from other students, copying from the internet, and using a translator app instead of writing in one's original words will result in a lower grade, and possibly failure

Participation & work in class: 25%, homework assignments & projects: 50%, final project: 25%.
There will be no tests: your grade will depend on your weekly work in class, and all the projects and presentations we will work on.
Please note that you will not achieve a passing grade for attendance only: you will need to submit all assignments to pass.


Grades of A+, A, B, or C will be awarded based on the quality of coursework, and on effort demonstrated by classroom participation.

Cheating/copying will result in a lower grade, and possibly failure (no credit).
