授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
In this course “International Organizations I”, students will learn about the definition, roles, categories, functions, and history of international organizations. They will learn about the role of the United Nations (UN) and how various UN agencies tackle key global issues, including international peace and security, economic and social development, human rights, and humanitarian assistance. UN's activities to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be examined. The students will also learn about the strengths and limitations of UN agencies as well as future challenges in addressing the evolving needs in the world.
到達目標Goal
The students will deepen their understanding on the conditions and circumstances that led to the creation of international organizations as well as their role in the world. Their understanding will be particularly enhanced on the unique role of the UN as well as their strengths and limitations by examining the function of its principal organs and various UN agencies. The students will also understand how the UN system agencies collaborate with each other and with other partners in global partnerships to achieve the SDGs. Through the lectures and discussions in English, the students will also enhance their English language proficiency.

The course offers a blend of theory and practice on issues related to international organizations, notably the UN and its work. Students will examine the different roles and activities of UN agencies, including their strengths and limitations using examples of past and present. The course will be conducted in English considering that its proficiency is required to study materials produced and dealt by UN and other international organizations. Students are expected to read the assigned materials and participate in class discussions.
