Outline (in English)

This course will introduce students a fundamental understanding of the politics and society of Oceania through a focus on the history of Pacific Islands.
The course then examines some important specific issues such as human migration; the processes of imperialism and colonialism; militarization as a neocolonialism; decolonization movement by indigenous peoples; navigation and livelihood in the Pacific Ocean. The focus is on Micronesia-Japan relations. It is strongly recommended that this course be taken after taking “Politics and Society of Oceania I.”
【Learning Objectives】
Students will be able to
1. Understand the Oceania focused on the historical relationship between Micronesia and Japan with reviewing international relations and Japanese modern and contemporary history.
2. Acquire the fundamental understanding of Micronesia-Japan relations especially about imperialism, colonialism, militarism and decolonization.
3. Develop a critical thinking about the role and responsibilities of Japan/ Japanese as a member of Pacific Islands/ Pacific Islanders.

The standard time required for preparatory study and review for this class are 2 hours each.

1. Reaction Papers, Quizzes and Small Assignments during the semester:50%
