Outline (in English)

(Outline and objectives)
This course examines Japanese politics and diplomacy in the postwar era, with a special focus on the links between diplomacy and domestic politics. The following topics are to be covered
1) political and security issues during the occupation era such as the establishment of the Constitution, negotiations over the Peace Treaty and the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty,
2) turning points of Japan’s security policy such as amendment of the Security Treaty, negotiation for Okinawa reversion, and dispatch of corps to UN peacekeeping operations,
3) normalization of diplomatic relations and remaining problems with China, Russia, and South Korea, and historical issues concerning World War II.

(Learning activities outside of the classroom)
Students should expect to spend an additional four hours before/after the lecture class engaged in reading, review, and writing activities.

(Grading Criteria/Policy)
Grading will be decided based on the small tests(50%) and term-end examination(50%).
